SMMT’s annual issues survey, based on feedback from over 100 industry heads, has discovered that value for money continues to eclipse value for the environment for motor manufacturers’ customers.
Contributors to the drive in demand were tax incentives, cheaper fuels, sustainable fuel production and improved consumer information. However, 56 per cent of those asked said that no one factor could be held solely accountable.
“Of course, price will remain an important factor for all new vehicle buyers,” said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. “However, we all appreciate that low emissions should be higher up the list of priorities… We need more joined-up thinking to continue to drive demand for all types of lower-carbon vehicles.”
As highlighted by industry bosses in the survey, financial incentive is key to increasing consumer demand for ‘greener’ vehicles.
“Our colleagues in the industry clearly feel that partnership between industry, government, fuel companies and consumers is the best way to deliver sustainable motoring sooner and most effectively,” explained Macgowan.
