It's here...micron adjustment to a tool’s cutting edge while installed on a machine spindle

17 July 2007 16:30 Company Profile

Rigibore® launches Smartbore™ - Smartbore™ is the industry’s latest boring system that enables quick adjustment to a tool’s cutting edge while installed on a machine spindle.

Smartbore™ minimises interruptions to machining operations, provides easy read-off checks with the hand-held adjuster or a separate mobile reader and offers fine adjustment to within 1 micron! Smartbore™ delivers pioneering accuracy, ensures consistency in manufacture and empowers manufacturers to achieve radical productivity gains by reducing bottlenecks and improving output quality and standards.

“Manufacturers need to produce large batches of items in one go” said Roger Bassett, Managing Director of Rigibore®. “If the last part falls within tolerance of a few microns, the batch is approved. If it doesn’t, the batch has to be scrapped, representing a huge financial loss.”

Engineers want the ability to make accurate micron adjustments to the boring tool cutting edges when in the machine spindle. The traditional approach involves time-consuming procedures requiring a great deal of skill and experience to achieve complete accuracy. Several components may have to be rejected before the right size is achieved, resulting in significant expense.

Now, because Smartbore™ is accurate to 1µm on diameter and is so easy to use, far fewer rejects occur saving both money and valuable resources. With Smartbore™ you can clearly see how much you are adjusting the tool, down to the micron!

Don Charlton, Rigibore®’s Research and Development Project Manager commented, “For complete flexibility, the digital adjustment can be displayed away from the adjuster tool on our remote display. The same readout could also be displayed on a nearby computer monitor, or even on a large LCD screen mounted high in the manufacturing hall.”

Smartbore™ is an exceptionally flexible system: as well as being incorporated into new tools it can also readily be retrofitted to existing tools with UFP cartridges. Suitable for a wide range of boring applications, it can be incorporated into tools to fit any machine spindle with multiple Smartbore™ cutting edges per tool for multiple bore machining.

How can you find out more about the all-new Rigibore Smartbore™?
