Boeing And Airbus Win BA Deals

01 October 2007 14:47 Company Profile

British Airways has split its biggest aircraft order in almost ten years by placing orders with both Airbus and Boeing.

In a deal worth around £4 billion, BA is to buy 12 Airbus A380 superjumbos and 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, all powered by Rolls-Royce engines. It also has options to purchase a further seven A380s and 18 of the 787 planes.

The planes will be delivered between 2010 and 2014.

"This is an exciting day for British Airways with our largest fleet order since 1998. It's great news for our business, our customers and the environment," said Willie Walsh, British Airways' chief executive, this morning.

Mr Walsh added that both aircraft will be quieter and more fuel-efficient than BA's existing fleet.

By choosing to buy the A380s, BA has given Airbus a much-needed boost. The A380 has been delayed by two years because of wiring faults. The firm recently warned that the strong euro could force it to make job cuts.
