1. Heathrow expansion could create 26,000 new manufacturing jobs for Northern Powerhouse

Research undertaken by planning consultancy Quod, has claimed that up to 95,000 new manufacturing jobs could be created across Britain if Heathrow is given the go-ahead to expand.

Northern England could claim over 26,000 of these jobs with the government looking to boost economic growth in this area of the country. As a trade-sensitive industry, manufacturing is expected to benefit from new and improved trade links, as well as the ripple-effect of Heathrow-related growth.

2. Manufacturers lead the way as region fights back – Chamber survey

Sales for both home and abroad in Birmingham have increased to levels not experienced for over 18 months, with 50% of manufacturers experiencing growth.

The GBCC quarterly economic survey also found that manufacturers are continuing to increase their workforces, with 43% expected to do so further in the next three months. However, the survey also showed that the skills shortage is still an issue with 75% of companies revealing that they had experienced difficulties in recruitment.

3. Want a plan for how to get more women into engineering? It’s easy

The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) president has called for engineering companies to bring in quotas for their female employees, following several leading women wanting to pioneer a stronger approach.
