Mattel Boss Defends Product Safety Record

Toy maker pledges to help improve industry practices amid concerns over lead levels in products made mainly in China

The chief executive of Mattel defended his company s safety record at a US hearing into the extent of lead contamination in children s toys.

It comes after the recall of millions of mainly Chinese-made toys in recent months over their lead content.

Robert Eckert told a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee that his company was aggressively testing toys to make sure they were safe, and said employees would make more surprise inspections of factories.

The subcommittee  had released a letter from Mattel disclosing that the recent recalls included one toy that had nearly 200 times the amount of lead in paint allowed under US law.

'I can assure this committee that we'll share with other toy companies what we've learned to help improve industry practices overall,' Eckert said in testimony.
