The annual EEF manufacturing photography competition is now open for entries celebrating the best of British manufacturing in the traditional and high-tech sectors. Now in its eighth year, this year the competition is asking that photographers submit images that capture the essence of modern manufacturing from design, process and technology in action through to the finished product. Sandcastles inspire a way to 3D-print with silicone
North Carolina State University researchers have developed a method that could allow 3D printing with a silicone-based paste to creates structures which could have applications in medicine and soft robotics The researchers used a similar approach to that of children building sandcastles from wet sand in order to achieve 3D printing of the flexible, porous rubber structures. Hyperloop pod could get from London to Edinburgh in 35 min
Flying through a metal tunnel at close to the speed of sound, a pod carrying 30 people could travel from London to Edinburgh in just 35 minutes. A group of about 50 students from the University of Edinburgh is designing the pod as part of an international effort to create a commercially viable Hyperloop, first proposed by Elon Musk in 2012. The concept involves levitating pods travelling at high speeds through tunnels with low air pressure. It is hoped that it could be “more efficient, greener, on-demand and faster” than existing travel options. Read more...
 

3D facial recognition project gets funding boost
A new type of advanced facial recognition system has received funding from Innovate UK, with a view to making the technology commercially available. Developed by the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in conjunction with biometrics company Customer Clever, the high-resolution 3D system is claimed to be significantly more accurate than the 2D face mapping currently available.
