Cutting tools are used to cut - or otherwise remove - material within the machining process. There are a number of different types of cutting tools such as blades, drill bits and counterbores/sinks. These all remove material from a workpiece, either by cutting or grinding it away. Cutting tools are often machined themselves in order to facilitate the sharp points, edges and chamfers required to cut or grind material.
In order to successfully cut the workpiece, the cutting tool must be made from a harder material than the workpiece itself. It must also be able to withstand the heat and friction resulting from the cutting process. Common materials used within the manufacture of cutting tools include tool steel, cemented carbide, carbon steel, alloy steel, mild steel and even diamond.
