A die is a tool that is used to form and/or cut material into a particular shape. The term 'die' covers a broad spectrum of tools, but the function is generally limited to cutting, forming and finishing in accordance with the design specifications.
A die sometimes comprises multiple parts and can be very intricate. Therefore, the manufacture of a die usually involves multiple production processes including milling, turning, threading, drilling, laser cutting and welding. Owing to the complex nature of dies, die manufacture is usually a specialist process undertaken by dedicated toolmakers.
Dies are typically made using tool steel, due to its hardness and wear-resistance. However, some of the piece parts may be made from alternative materials such as carbide.
