Overview

Perfect for rapid prototyping, fused deposition modelling - or FDM for short - involves the layering of materials to create a design from a 3D CAD file. It has been widely embraced by sectors such as automotive and aerospace, with medical and orthodontics also using it for short production runs. FDM machines are available in both desktop versions and larger production models, making them versatile enough to assist within all manner of applications.

    3D printing specialists are sought by a buyer who spends over £600,000 each year on subcontract manufacturing. The attached items are to be printed from PVC, ready for end use within food packaging machinery. These have previously been machined; however, the client is looking for an alternative method of manufacture. This project could lead to both ongoing and additional work for the successful supplier.

    This client is looking for quotations with regards to the 3D printing of a new product, which will be used to house gadgets for sale to the general public. Quotes are required for 750 off each part and the client has also advised that the quantities required could possibly increase to 1000 off before the order is placed. Because of its end application as a consumer product, a quality finish on this part is very important. This is an ideal opportunity to fill short-term capacity - in addition, there may be scope for the chosen supplier to expand upon their involvement with the client once this order has been fulfilled.

These parts are currently produced via FDM, although the client is open to suggestion regarding the best method of manufacture. This could become an ongoing requirement for the right supplier, once value and reliability have been proven.
