Standards and specials manufacturer Lee Spring have announced for 2017 a greatly expanded range of DIN sizes with an additional 525 SKUs. These will include a new DIN-Plus series which match up in size with standard DIN2098 Part 2 and Part 1 series springs, but with added corrosion resistance (passivation for stainless EN 10270-3-1.4310-NS range and plating for spring steel EN 10270-1-SH range). This greatly expands the Lee Spring offering in DIN compression springs to meet increasing global demand for metric sizes with the added benefit of excellent corrosion resistance.
Lee Spring is proud of their close to 100 year tradition and are proud to reflect on the considerable growth in availability of springs and development in spring technology during that period.
Standard stock springs are our daily fare. With over 25,000 products catalogued and stocked we see many new products and spring technologies have emerged, perhaps most significantly:
- Redux™ Wave Springs
- LeeP™ Plastic Composite Springs
- Lite Pressure™ Compression Springs
- Bantam™ Mini-Compression Springs
With over 1,800 new standard parts anticipated for the Lee Spring catalogue in 2017, we are looking forward to a taster of new ranges at the Southern Manufacturing Exhibition at Farnborough on 21-23rd March.
Chris Petts, Managing Director of Lee Spring UK explains the importance of selecting the correct fastener or spring to suit application requirements.
From concept to delivery it is important to consider all aspects of spring installation and usage including configuration, e.g. cylindrical, barrel or cone, as well as the optimal choice of material from a selection of steel, stainless steel, alloys and super alloys, each with its own possibilities for surface treatments.
Spring life is a very important factor to consider in the design and specification process because springs are often vital components within an assembly where failure may lead to significant consequences. Chris Petts at Lee Spring offers the following thoughts on the subject.
What lies ahead in the realm of spring manufacture – well amongst others we at Lee Spring are constantly refining our designs and have recently introduced our ranges of Lite Pressure™ and Bantam™ Mini Springs, along with LeeP™ Plastic Composite Springs. In particular though, it is often the choice of material which gives us most thought for the future as it shows the way forward in spring technology.
Environmental thinking at Lee Spring runs through the whole design production process with a focus on quality in all aspects where higher quality connects to greater reliability and reduced replacements. Similarly, in design details like the choice to offer round wire die springs in place of older style square sections with resulting lower energy costs.
Normal alloy steels have various elements added in small quantities to improve their material strength, hardenability, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and other properties and any level of carbon can be combined with these alloying elements.
Standard catalogue company Lee Spring have recently announced 3 new variants of their torsion spring range with new free angle leg end options of 120°, 210° and 300°. This will enable users to specify even more closely and to optimise their device design whether for electronic devices, chair controls, clipboards, swing-down tailgates or other applications. These extra choices will enable return hinges, counterbalances, ratchet and lever return specifications to more closely meet many desired product criteria.
As major suppliers of ex-stock die springs Lee Spring are keen to expand their standard ranges – in this case their Die Spring catalogue has been greatly extended with 71 new items. These new items in music wire or OTCS (chrome silicon steel) reduce the gap between different standard lengths with additional options over 6 inch lengths, so making it easier to choose a suitable standard spring. New lengths include 4, 5, 6, 7, 7.5 and 8 inch with 8 different outer diameters to suit medium (grey), medium-heavy (purple), heavy (black) and extra heavy duty (orange) loadings.
Ex-stock standard sizes of extension springs in music wire and stainless steel are a mainstay of many industrial products, so it is good news that leading manufacturer Lee Spring has introduced 121 new sizes including shorter and longer designs, plus new 16.5mm (0.650 inches) outer diameter families.
Of particular interest to Europe wide design/manufacturing companies will be the recently announced Lee Spring sales/distribution centre in Germany adding to the company’s existing distribution and engineering locations around the world.
Explained M.D. Dejan Unger: “We can offer customers across Europe expert distribution links with next day delivery to the majority of regions from our 23,000 plus ex-stock catalogue. Lee Spring Germany can supply direct to locations throughout Europe and work closely with our colleagues in the UK to co-ordinate with customers based there.”
Lee Spring will this year be exhibiting at the Northern Manufacturing & Electronics Show in Manchester on September 28th and 29th. An event where northern based design, production and service engineers will have the opportunity to deal with spring related issues with highly experienced sales engineers. A conversation which can rapidly assess the suitability of ex-stock standard springs from the Lee Spring 23,000 component catalogue which is available free on the stand – or whether a custom item would be more suitable.
The date: September 22nd; the place: The Williams Conference Centre; the event: FAST Exhibition – an opportunity for designers, production and support engineers to discuss spring technology with the experts at Lee Spring, Under their banner of “ingenious, innovative, in-stock” Lee Spring will have their new catalogue available on stand, along with a selection of standard springs – but perhaps most importantly, experienced spring sales engineers will be offering the benefits of their understanding to address real world applications with very real solutions.
Cone formed Belleville spring washers are now available ex-stock from Lee Spring in 300 series passivated stainless steel. Typically this design offers dramatic savings in height and load capability where they are ideal for common engineering applications requiring high load performance in a small space with minimal deflection. They are often used to solve vibration, thermal expansion, relaxation and bolt creep problems and are useful for adjustments, because different thicknesses can be swapped in and out.
With 3,000+ new products and over 23,000 standard industrial springs the new Lee Spring UK catalogue is now available free on request. Additions to the range include 3 new torsion spring variants with 120°, 210° and 300° leg endings – there are now 7 free angle options from 90° to 360°. More Die Springs have been added throughout the range; especially notable being extra sizes over 6" free length up to 12" long and with the same Lee Spring powder coating finish for enhanced protection.
Across applications from engines to vehicle trim, kids toys to sophisticated medical devices and sensitive instrumentation to valves of many types, the Lee Spring capability to quickly create application specific springs and spring components such as fourslide parts is putting a spring in the step of UK manufacturing industry.
For optimum performance in space limited environments the Lee Spring REDUX™ Wave spring series of ex-stock flat wire compression springs can replace conventional round wire compression springs in applications across many industries from aerospace to electrical, fluid control, hand tools, valves and seals. Wave springs can reduce the size and weight of the assembly by as much as 50%. Items such as connectors, mounting dampers and pumps can be made dramatically smaller than otherwise.
The Lee Spring catalogue range of high quality ex-stock compression springs now includes wire sizes of 2mm (0.080") upward in AISI 316 stainless steel which provides an enhanced degree of corrosion resistance, particularly to chloride attack. This makes the new series preferentially suited to marine environments and wash-down areas where chloride atmospheres and chemicals may be encountered. These new wire sizes offer up to 660 Newtons or 148 lbs of loading force.
From engines to trim, toys to medical devices and instrumentation to valves, the Lee Spring capability to quickly create application specific springs and spring components is aiding the regrowth of UK manufacturing industry.
Although Lee Spring carry over 23,000 catalogued items, it is just as common to find that a variant or complete custom item is required to suit a new design or new assembly process. A special spring design may add quality to product operation or its longevity, often with significant savings in component cost and/or assembly time.
