Electronics design and manufacture specialist Jaltek systems has picked up a Make UK Business Growth and Strategy regional award.
Luton-based Jaltek won the award in the regional heats of Make Uk’s national manufacturing awards programme.
The awards, which recognise excellence among manufacturing companies in seven categories, as well as five Apprentice categories, were held virtually at an online ceremony for the Midlands and East of England.

Bigger mould-making capacity

A new bridge-type machining centre at Moorland Toolmaking in Batley, West Yorkshire allows it to make larger and more accurate moulds and subcontract machined parts.
Installed in March this year, the Hurco BX50i double-column, bridge-type machining centre as a 1,350 x 950 x 600 mm envelope for producing big tools weighing up to 2.5 tonnes.

Whilst this is a positive indicator of investment in innovation, the number of companies making claims is still far lower than it should be, according to European intellectual property firm, Withers & Rogers.

The company supplies the NHS, F1 and motor sport teams and the defence, medical and aerospace sectors.
The last wear saw double-digit revenue and profit growth, a raft of new strategic capital investments and recruitment drive at a time when sector rivals are retrenching.
Key financial highlights include revenue up 13.5% to £13m and profit up to £1.2m.

Component manufacturer Rockwood Composites has grown its turnover almost ten-fold in the past ten years and grown its workforce six-fold.
This has included over 50% growth compared to last year in the midst of huge uncertainty for the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Rockwood has gone from strength to strength recently in the face of the pandemic increasing turnover strongly and continued recruiting throughout with a 20% increase in staff in the last six months.

Green turned parts

Qualiturn Products Ltd can now offer customers green turned parts produced using sustainable energy thanks to the installation of solar photovoltaic panels at its new factory in Hertford.
The company has installed 381 panels on its roof with the capacity to produce max 135kW.
Managing Director Nick Groom says that typical demand in the factory is around 120 to 140kW, so in ideal conditions, with the sun in the right position and no cloud cover, it could meet all the factory’s power needs in peak sun hours.

Subcontract market bounces back

The latest Contract Manufacturing Index for the third quarter of 2020 (Q3) shows that the subcontract market bounced back strongly in July and August after the Covid-19 shutdown.
The market fell slightly in September, but was still 14% higher than at any point in the previous quarter. The signs are that larger companies have projects in the pipeline but they are taking longer than normal to come to market as many staff continue to work from home.
