The art of Ring Rolling

As part of our ongoing investment program we have put money into Ring Rolling equipment. We won a £80,000 contract to make these large dimension rings from a customer who features heavily in the power conversion market. The application for these unique busbars plays an essential role within units which power the energy used to contain pressurised gas in large shipping containers for transportation globally.

The bubars that we are currently forming for our end customer is from solid Copper section 10x70mm into 1.6 metre diameter rings.

The machine itself is the DS60 HV Plus which is able to bend section sizes of flat bar up to 120mm thanks to the three drive rolls, the two rotating speeds and the adjustment of the central roll, just proving the high quality extremely versatile characteristics of the machine. The predetermination of the bending radius is the true strength of the compact numerical control, which applied to the machine in the CN version enables it to perform variable bending radii without any difficulty for making Round, Mediterranean, Pointed or Oval arches as well as many shapes with a join between straight and curved parts.

To further support the work that HV Wooding carries out and to complete the ring rolling contract we have also invested in brazing equipment. We are brazing copper faces together with a section size of 10.0mm thick (total 20.0mm) x 70.0mm x 70.0mm. We have also developed a process to give us 99% brazing penetration.
