Showing the way in bringing on the next generation of home grown talent, Anne Wilson MBE, MD of Numill Tooling Solutions has been working with local schools to give young people to find out more about a career in engineering.

Anne works with schools in her capacity as Cutlers Champion for Outwood Academy City in Sheffield.  She is also Enterprise Adviser for the school & a governor having responsibility for connections with employers and industry.   Anne has also been a Governor at Sheffield College for over 2 years.

She says: “Numill are passionate about home grown talent to ensure we have the necessary skills needed for the future.  Employing apprentices, working with schools to spread the word about engineering and its vital contribution to both regional and national economy is what we do every day.”

As part of working with schools some of the Cutlers Ambassadors from Outwood Academy City have spent time at Numill on work experience this August.   Sam Rowley and Connor Menzies (pictured) joined the company during a 2-week placement opportunity.  Another Outwood student enjoyed a placement at Newburgh Engineering.

Anne ads: “The value of students being able to access and experience the world of work should not be underestimated.  The amount of learning that occurs on work placements is immeasurable.

“As well as being able to try out different operational tasks like Cad, machining and even despatch,  the real learning occurs around the core skills of the Cutlers, Better Learners, Better Workers format to build character and increase confidence. Noticeable difference in students occurs from one day to the next.”

The Numill team embraced the opportunity to share their knowledge with the students and showing how they use the skills they have developed in their working days.

Anne concludes: “We would encourage more employers to get involved with schools and students to share working life experiences and skill sets required in various careers. If we don’t tell them, they don’t know!

“Giving a few hours a month or more if you can will benefit our workforces of the future whether they come straight to industry from school or chose an academic path they will all need employability skills – and we will want, no expect, them to have them.”
