Tata Steel crisis: David Cameron says ‘no guarantee of success’

Tata Steel has 15,000 workers in the UK; 5,000 of which are at the plants in Lanarkshire and Scunthorpe, which are currently in the process of being sold to Liberty Group and Greybull Capital.

Tata has decided to sell its UK business, but the Prime Minister believes that nationalisation is not the answer. He says the government is “doing everything it can” to save the thousands of jobs that are facing an uncertain future, but has warned that there are also “no guarantees of success”.

UK manufacturers struggle to access skills for industry demands

EEF has recently published a new report highlighting the government’s failure to adequately handle the skills shortage that is consequently impairing industry productivity and manufacturers’ efforts to combat the crisis.

Almost three quarters of organisations (73%) said they have found it difficult to recruit skilled workers in the past three years, while a similar 72% are worried about securing the skills to drive productivity in the next three years. In the face of these challenges, many manufacturers are offering competitive salaries, career development opportunities, training and flexible working as incentives to attract skilled workers.
