The beginning of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week

Monday marked the beginning of a week dedicated to inspiring the UK’s next generation of engineers, but why exactly is it so important to attract young people into a career in the industry?

According to the manufacturers’ organisation, EEF, there will be over 2.5 million job openings in engineering companies up to 2022, as well as the fact that there will be the need to replace almost a million workers who will retire or leave the industry. 72% believe that raising awareness of apprenticeships and combining STEM initiatives with this will encourage more young people to take up careers in manufacturing.

UK manufacturing picks up in October

According to latest surveys, October proved to be the best month in more than a year for the UK’s manufacturing sector; PMI figures came in at 55.5, up from 51.8 in September.

This improvement is considerably better than what was predicted and comes despite the struggles the steel sector is currently facing. Senior Economist for Markit, Rob Dobson, said “The revival provides a tentative suggestion that manufacturers are pulling out of their recent funk, and may help boost economic growth in the fourth quarter”.

Manufacturers well placed to navigate through VW emissions storm

Amid the emissions crisis that is facing Volkswagen, it’s thought that a number of business opportunities could be presented to other automotive component manufacturers who could even achieve growth as a result of the scandal.

The crisis has come at a time where the car industry has been performing strongly; new car sales have been rising in recent months – September saw an 8.6% rise on the same period last year. However, it is also expected to have an impact on the sale of diesel-engine cars in months ahead, so suppliers should be prepared to react quickly.
