2015 – the year in engineering

2015 has now long drawn to a close, but it was definitely a year of big engineering headlines. As we prepare to welcome what 2016 has to offer, The Engineer has taken a look back at some of these moments, ranging from the controversial to the extraordinary.

Over a quarter of SMEs in engineering expect business to expand in 2016

The Close Brothers Business Barometer has revealed that 22% of SMEs in the engineering sector are expecting their business to expand in 2016, while 60% expect performance to remain on par.

With the UK economy continuing to grow, it’s encouraging to see that 57% of people surveyed believe that the worst is behind them and that they are confident about further recovery in the future.

Record year for British plane manufacturing

British manufacturing is set to be boosted from the aerospace sector, as it looks as though 2015 may be a record year for the industry.

UK engineers contributed to the delivery of 1,265 new planes by the end of November, which is up 5% of the same period in 2014. ADS Group has said the deliveries are worth £21.5bn to the UK industry, and that strong order books will translate into long-term employment for the country.
