Budget 2016: The Manufacturer’s coverage

Chancellor George Osborne delivered his eighth Budget this week, with the CBI and EEF all largely positive about the points that were raised.

CBI Director-General, Carolyn Fairbairn commented: “After a year of surprises, this was a stable Budget for business facing global stormy waters. The Chancellor has listened to our concerns and has chosen to back business to grow the economy out of the deficit.” One of the biggest reforms announced was the cut to business rates, which will see around 600,000 small businesses not having to pay rates while 250,000 others can expect to see theirs cut from April 2017.

79% of manufacturers plan to recruit an apprentice in 2016

According to a new survey conducted by EEF, a record number of firms are looking to recruit a manufacturing or engineering apprentice this year.

Raising awareness has been seen as the key to the increase, with statistics highlighting that manufacturing and engineering accounted for 15% of all apprenticeships started in 2015. Senior Employment and Skills Policy Adviser at EEF, Verity O’Keefe commented: “Manufacturers have a long track record of championing high quality apprenticeships and ensuring that young people enjoy every opportunity to start a satisfying and well-paid career.”
