Manufacturing stabilises in November

According to the latest CBI monthly Industrial Trends Survey, manufacturing orders stabilised in November, but exports were at their lowest for almost three years.

20% of manufacturers reported that the level of their order books was above normal, while 29% also reported that output grew in the three months to November. In recent times, manufacturers have been held back by a strong pound and a weakening global growth outlook, so it is important that areas of growth enhancing spending are prioritised for the future.

New £12.5m STEM campus for Derby University

STEM subjects are set to take centre stage at Derby University in the coming years as a new 4,200 square-metre building is constructed, combining functional teaching space with infrastructure designed for engineering and computing.

The facility will allow students to gain high-quality skills and academic knowledge to help further their future careers in the various industries. It is also hoped that the project will create a steady flow of skilled graduates ready to enter the world of work in the Derby area, also helping to further its success as an engineering city.

Car manufacturing hits best 10 month performance in a decade

Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed that a total of 1,318,452 new cars rolled off UK production lines in the first 10 months of this year, highs that have not been seen for a decade.

Production is up 2.8% year-to-date and more than one million British-built cars were shipped to global markets in 2015. Despite the positive figures, SMMT discovered that output in October fell by 0.7%. But the small drop failed to cloud the UK’s robust performance so far this year, and at a time where global slowdown is affecting key markets, it’s clear to see that the country is in a strong position.
