Trump moves to revive coal industry
US President Trump has this week passed measures aimed at reviving the country's declining coal industry. The move is part of a series of steps aimed at removing environmental regulations that Trump refers to as “job killing”. This, combined with a promise to “return power to the states” on environmental issues would, according to Trump, bring jobs back to the coal industry.

"Britain must totally withdraw from the customs union"
Last week Open Europe published a report, Nothing to Declare, arguing that the UK should leave the customs union. Prospect Magazine highlighted examples such as the Norwegian-Swedish border. Norway is outside of the EU’s Customs Union but trades freely with Sweden, which is inside it. With the clever use of technology and reciprocal agreements, the need for physical checks there on cross-border goods traffic is largely obviated.

Robots don’t steal jobs, they create them
Contrary to popular speculation that robots could take British jobs, new data exclusively shared with The Manufacturer has revealed that the majority of industry professionals (63.3%) have never witnessed job losses as a result of the introduction of robots or automated processes. Furthermore, more than a third (36.7%) stated that robots have often resulted in job creation within their place of work. The research took into account more than 1,000 manufacturing professionals and was conducted by The Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF), a non-profit body for ergonomists and human factors practitioners, in collaboration with CV-Library, a leading independent job site.

Work to begin on “extreme altitude” telescope for probing dark universe
Construction is ready to begin on a new telescope, which will be based at the summit of a mountain in the Chilean desert. The telescope will allow scientists to explore the formation of stars and galaxies in the early universe.

Coal power plants are facing a bleak future in Europe after Eurelectric, which represents 3,500 companies in the electricity sector, announced that investment would end after 2020.
