Is focus on industrial strategy key to Brexit survival?

A new report, compiled by an alliance of the UK’s professional engineering organisations, has hailed the government’s renewed focus on industrial strategy, believing it is a major opportunity for the country to compete on a global scale.

The report emphasises the challenge Brexit may present to the UK, especially if companies and universities do not have access to skilled engineers from within the EU. It also highlights that innovation will be critical success, and that losing access to EU funding will impact the quality and quantity of UK research.

What happens when you give a 3D printer artificial intelligence?

The growth of 3D printing and artificial intelligence has made both some of the most disruptive technologies in the industry today. In an attempt to “push the boundaries of how intricate we could design things through computation”, a London-based start-up has combined the two to make a machine that can see, create and even learn from mistakes.

Ai Build’s new robotic arm combines foam guns, cameras and machine vision algorithms to analyse the structures being printed. This allowed the robot to detect defects and compensate for them in subsequent layers. Tests have found that items can be printed in half the time taken without the addition of artificial intelligence.

Thales invests in UK space industry

Space design and manufacturing has reached a major milestone as Thales opens its first electric space propulsion integration centre in Belfast, the first of its kind in the UK.

The centre will manufacture the systems to help satellites to carry larger payloads for an extended amount of time. This will then reduce the cost of operating the platform in space. Victor Chavez, chief executive of Thales UK, said: “The opening of this propulsion centre represents a major milestone in our commitment to invest in the future of space manufacturing and game changing technology in Belfast and the UK.”
