Forming of Extrusions

As extrusion is a forming process, this category applies to the extrusion process only, without any design, secondary operations or assembly completed by the extrusion supplier.

The first step in the process is to create a die resembling the desired cross-sectional profile of the extrusion - alternatively this can be free-issued to the supplier if tooling already exists.. The die is mounted to one end of an extrusion press, whilst the material is placed into the cylinder and forced through the die by a piston. Depending on whether a hot or cold extrusion process is being used, the material may be heated, or kept at room temperature.

As the material is forced out of the die, it takes on its profile, meaning that long lengths of extruded material can be created with cross-sectional symmetry. These are then cut to the required length.

Secondary operations such as finish machining or surface treatment may still need to be carried out to ensure that the extruded components meet the required specifications.

Used to produce

Extruded components where a design already exists, without any secondary operations such as machining or surface treatment.

Materials

Aluminium is the most commonly-used material within the extrusion process, although others can be used such as plastic, copper, brass, steel, lead, tin and even titanium.

Advantages

Can save money if secondary operations can be completed in-house.
Results in a shorter lead time to produce extruded parts, due to the lack of secondary operations.

Disadvantages

Secondary operations such as finish machining or surface treatment may still need to be carried out to ensure that the extruded components meet the required specifications.

To help you to get the best possible response, prices and right type of suppliers in contact with you, please be as specific as you can. For example by letting the potential supplier know if there could be future work available might produce better quotes.
You can add up to 5 parts in this section. However, if you have more you can always upload a bill of materials file above or discuss this with your sourcing account manager when they contact you.

What is the best method for suppliers to contact you?

We will be putting suppliers in contact with you directly so they can quote your project. Some suppliers may have questions so they can quote you correctly. Additionally, most suppliers usually like to follow up to see how they got on and all we ask is that you provide them with feedback, whether they have won the project or not. With this in mind what is the best method to reach you on (you can choose both)?
