Encouraging women into engineering

To mark International Women in Engineering Day, Derby-based composites manufacturer Pentaxia is launching a social media campaign, to help encourage girls and women pursue careers in engineering.

Project engineer Grace Atkinson, design engineer Kenzie Myers and composite laminator Maria Parkes have pioneered the #GoForIt campaign and will be showcase their career highlights and share advice in blogs and on Twitter throughout the day.

“I have been fortunate to have worked with some unbelievably talented and knowledgeable people throughout my career so far,” explained Ms Atkinson, “and I'm keen to encourage other young people to take up a career in engineering.”

Since joining Pentaxia eight months ago, Ms Atkinson has joined the management team with responsibility for a team of engineers and business development.

Pentaxia specialises in composites which are used in the motorsport and aerospace sectors. It currently employs more than 90 staff and is set to expand further, with more than 20 new jobs in the pipeline, and a move to 70,000 ft2 of new manufacturing and high-quality office space later this year.

Over the past twelve months, the company has achieved a growth of more than 60% due to a rapid increase in demand for lightweight, high performance components from its blue-chip customers in the aerospace, automotive and motorsport industries.

The new the site covers six acres, which gives it room to expand even further in the future, possibly doubling the space again. It will also allow the firm to concentrate all its operations under one roof, significantly improving productivity.
