ES Precision has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Subcon Launchpad Awards 2019 for its work on making artificial limbs more comfortable.

The event is at the NEC in early June and aims to promote cutting-edge innovation across UK manufacturing industry.

ES provides a laser processing service focused on finer, precision jobs for businesses such as medical device manufacturers, motorsport companies and the general engineering sector.

Much of its work is permanent surface modification – marking and engraving for example. It also cuts and drills metals, ceramics and organics, but only thin materials, generally <1mm.

The shortlisting is based on an innovative drilling solution that ES developed for Blatchford. Blatchford is a British company that develops rehabilitation products, many of which are used by veterans of our armed forces.

Its award-winning range of lower limb prosthetics is designed to provide the best possible mobility, function and comfort after amputation. Optimal control of a prosthetic limb depends on a comfortable and secure connection between limb and socket. Modern liner technology provides excellent cushioning, but the impermeable and insulating materials can allow a build-up of heat and moisture, so they begin to slip and chafe.

The patented technology of Silcare Breathe works by letting air and perspiration trapped between the liner and skin to escape through specially designed laser drilled perforations.  This results in drier skin and a healthier environment for the residual limb.

ES Precision uses its laser technology to drill Blatchford’s Silcare Breathe liners with holes that are carefully controlled in terms of position and size for a best possible liner wear experience.

The aim of Launchpad is to promote the best of UK start-up companies and the Subcon show provides a small booth to each of the finalists during Subcon 2019 in June. The winning innovation company secures a £10,000 prize comprising a full stand and marketing support for Subcon 2020. ES welcomes the opportunity to promote laser solutions to all UK manufacturing companies and continue to be open to testing and trialling laser processes for best results using our 8 laser workstations with outputs ranging from near UV to far infrared.
