Engineering Council supports tenth National Apprenticeship Week

National Apprenticeship Week  runs from 6 to 10 March 2017 and aims to celebrate the positive impact that Apprenticeships and traineeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy. The week, co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service, encourages more employers to take on apprentices and individuals to choose an Apprenticeship as a ladder of opportunity to a great career.

UK auto investment on track

Research released by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, suggests the UK automotive industry remains resilient, despite ongoing uncertainty presented by the global economy and the UK’s future relationship with the EU.
David Atkinson, UK Head of Manufacturing at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking and report co-author, said: “The automotive industry remains the UK’s largest manufacturing export sector with a national supply chain and a presence in every UK region. This report highlights an industry looking to the future, eager to put any uncertainty generated by the EU referendum behind it.”

What happens once Theresa May triggers Article 50?

Despite peers voting against the government, Prime Minister May's March deadline will be stuck to. Once she does press the button, politics will matter more than economics. The government has committed to triggering Article 50, formally starting Brexit, by the end of this month. This means that Britain will be outside the European Union by spring 2019, unless both sides agree to extend negotiations or to introduce some sort of phased withdrawal.

Major skills boost for UK aerospace

Black Country training provider, In-Comm Training has been chosen to help deliver a suite of interactive online training resources for the UK aerospace sector. In-Comm Training, which operates two academies in Aldridge and Shrewsbury, is part of the £320,000 EU-funded Erasmus+ AEERO (Aerospace Engineering ECVET Resources Online) project that will develop a suite of interactive online training resources.

Annual Manufacturing Report 2017

The Annual Manufacturing Report 2017 (AMR), published by Hennik Research, reflects a surprisingly resilient mood among UK manufacturers. While many observers have predicted post-referendum disaster, manufacturers have been quick to capitalise on the benefits accruing from a pound that was revalued downwards sharply after the vote. Exports are up, order books are booming and jobs are plentiful.

Taser's X2 stun gun authorised for use in UK

A new model of conducted-energy stun gun has been authorised by the UK's Home Office for use by police in England and Wales. The 50,000-volt stun gun is also wired so electrical discharges from it never last longer than the recommended upper limit of five seconds when fired once. Other features include an electric crackle warning noise and a pulsating light to try and encourage a suspect to surrender before they are fired at.
