Great British Bake Off helps raise ETG sales

In what would be an unlikely ally when two industries collide, Engineering Technology Group (ETG) has received a £750,000 boost from houseware manufacturer, What More UK, who has seen demand for products soar since the popular baking show aired last year.

ETG had been requested to supply three Quaser VMC machining centres for What More, who hope to increase capacity, reduce production time and improve their ability to handle large progression tools with the introduction of the systems.

McLaren reveals new £50m research centre

Sheffield will be home to McLaren’s new composites research and manufacturing centre, which will be based near the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the city’s university.

It will be the manufacturers’ first purpose-built factory outside of their campus in Surrey, and will be responsible for the development of carbon fibre chassis. Work on the centre is expected to start soon, with more than 200 jobs created and the hope of adding £100m of gross value added (GVA) to the local area by 2028.

Four areas where UK industrial strategy needs to offer a unique vision

In order for UK industrial strategy to provide certainty for investment, generate jobs and boost skills across supply chains, it’s important that a unique vision is offered. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has put together an article, highlighting the areas they think are of the highest importance.

As well as highlighting future-proofing housing and ‘feeding the nation’ as two of their main focuses, the article also looks into the need for creating a skills market. To do this, programmes should be expanded, sector strategies should be developed and things such as apprenticeship approaches should be welcomed.
