UK launch of compact laser metal fusion machine
The experience TRUMPF has gained after many years in the laser metal fusion (LMF) and laser metal deposition (LMD) technology arenas provides an excellent grounding for its latest development in additive manufacturing. At TCT 2016, the company will unveil its new TruPrint 1000 machine for the first time in the UK, a compact machine for the production of small metal components by LMF.
This 3D print laser system is a true plug-and-play machine which is easy to install and only requires 240V of power and an inert gas connection. And thanks to an innovative coating system, downtimes are reduced to a minimum.
In the TruPrint 1000 and other TRUMPF LMF systems, the component is created layer by layer from a bed of finely divided powder. This technology is especially suitable for parts that are complex in their geometry – such as those with internal channels and hollow spaces, and for economical manufacture of individual parts, prototypes or short production runs. A large number of metallic materials in powder form can be used, including steel, aluminum and titanium
LMF technology features a number of advantages. For instance, freedom of design is almost limitless, while elaborate forms and individual components can be quickly, flexibly and profitably realised.
In terms of applications, the spectrum is wide. Everything from tool- and mould-making, where complex tools are made with conformal cooling, through to dental applications such as crowns and dental bridges. TRUMPF is also seeing potential with demanding applications in the aerospace industry and turbine construction. For instance, LMF paves the way for the ultimate in lightweight aerospace designs. Weight savings of between 30 and 50% are possible with the same, or even better, mechanical qualities.
Such is the scope for LMF that TRUMPF has now set up a dedicated department at its headquarters in Ditzingen to handle its continued development. All the operations that are essential to this end are located under the same roof. TRUMPF has also put together a team of applications engineers who are experts in their respective fields, and therefore capable of addressing specific customer needs.
