About Artec Engineering Ltd

Metal spinning services are Artec Engineering’s core area of business, but all of our in-house services are key to our ability to deliver a diverse range of metal spun and fabricated items.

Metal Spinning has been Artec Engineering’s core business since 1964 and is essential to most projects. Artec Engineering’s metal spinners apply a committed problem-solving approach to new and challenging projects, born out of experience and professional certification.

For each project, we develop the metal spinning and fabrication process hand in hand with the customer, sometimes as an ongoing process over a period of months or even years.

We gladly take on specialist one-off projects and have produced specialist metal spinning work for many industries, as diverse as aerospace, lighting, nuclear power, food processing, pharmaceutical, gas and oil and agricultural, to mention just a few.

Metal Spinning

Our three semi-automatic metal spinning lathes lend themselves to relatively high production.

We have also invested in two automatic DENN bespoke spinning lathes, which will produce high and low volume production runs with world class quality finish and dimensional repeatability.

Both machines move Artec Engineering into the 21st Century and will give us the competitive edge to bring manufacturing back to the UK.

Artec Engineering’s metal spinning services are not restricted to standard metals and have completed numerous projects with exotic metals. We take into consideration the characteristics of each material, its capabilities and its limits.

Artec have spun parts and components destined for the most testing of applications, such as nuclear power stations and aerospace applications.

Specifications are adhered to and met to the absolute finest of tolerances to ensure that the materials and fabrication processes withstand the stresses of the intended environment.

Metal Forming is part of the metal spinning process. Artec Engineering’s metal formers use a modern approach called flow forming, or shear forming.

With Shear forming, variation in wall thickness can be achieved and helps manufacturers achieve complex shapes typically required by the aerospace, automotive, nuclear, chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.

The key difference between standard metal spinning and flow forming is that conventional metal spinning starts with a ‘spinners blank’ and produces a part roughly the same diameter as the blank.

With flow forming, the thickness of the material is worked upon resulting in a component where the material is thinner than the original blank and can adopt a more complex shape.

Other methods of Metal Forming round metal parts include the likes of forging – where metal is shaped using localised compression, casting – pouring liquid metal into a mould, hydroforming – which uses a specialised die under pressure from hydraulic fluid, and stamping – which effectively punches a shape out of a sheet of metal.

Metal Polishing

About Metal Polishing

The polishing operation is also the final stage of the production process which ensures the item is not only aesthetically correct but is suitably protected to when it goes to its new environment.

We ensure that all of the polishing works meet drawing specification or as requested by the customer.

To ensure consistency for finished parts and ensure the highest standards are met, we complete all of our polishing in-house, which is carried out by one of our expert polishers.

We also have experience with working with a wide range of materials and can offer advice on what surface can be achieved.

Artec Engineering use a range of polishing machines and techniques depending on the specification and type of job being produced.

From abrasive belts and wheels, the types of machines and abrasives that are used during polishing will be dependent on the tensile strength of material used and the specified finish.

The number of stages of polishing will be dependent on the required surface finish.

Starting with 60 grit for raw material, each subsequent stage uses a finer abrasive, such as 120, 180, 220/240, 320, 400 and higher grit abrasives, until the desired finish is achieved.

We are able to guarantee an extremely high level of finish expected in the food and pharmaceutical industries and offer the following in-house finishes:

  • Brushed Satin Finish
  • Grain Finish
  • Fine Finish
  • Smooth Finish
  • Mirror Finish

As well as meeting the specific grades for industries such as food and pharmaceutical in which the surface finish is critical, our metal polishing techniques on our metal spinning projects for other industries are equally as important for aesthetic reasons.

Metal Welding

Metal Welding standards and qualifications are of the highest importance to ensure your project meets requirements. Artec Engineering utilise the latest welding and metal fabrication standards.

Our metal welders have over half a century of experience with the most complex of tasks.

Whatever level of welding your project requires, Artec will meet the relevant standards. If specific metal welding coding and procedures are required, we are always happy to provide a full quotation.

Welding is a crucial part in the manufacturing process to ensure that a high-strength joint is created between two metal surfaces.

The weld is a process in which two or more pieces are joined together at high temperatures and allowed to cool to cause fusion, creating a strong bond.

A filler material is typically added to the joint to form molten material that cools to form a joint. Depending on the weld configuration, which can be a butt, full penetration, fillet, etc., can be stronger than the base material.

Before any welding commences, there are several factors that need to considered when it comes to the welding process.

These include the type of metal being welded and its melting point, along with the electrical conductivity, inherent strength of the material and how the metal reacts to forces such as stretching and bending.

We have over half a century of experience with the most complex of tasks and take into consideration all of these factors to ensure that the highest standard of weld is achieved.

Ensuring that that all welding meets the specification outlined in the drawings provided by our customers is always a priority.

We are proud to supply a wide range of industries such as food and pharmaceutical, nuclear, gas and oil to name a few, where the welding of components and parts is a critical process to ensure the product is functional.

Having worked with some of the industry leaders across a range of different sectors for nearly 60 years, we are confident that we can tackle a huge variety of projects.

Metal Fabrication

We have the capacity to offer a wide range of in-house services such as guillotining, rolling, machining, swaging, polishing and shearing to name a few.

Providing these services enable us to reduce manufacturing time and additional costs often associated with sub-contracted but crucially we can monitor, maintain and ensure the high standards are consistent with each and every item we manufacture.

We have metal fabricators experienced in all types of metal welding and metal fabrication, such as stud welding, spot welding, Braze (silver solder), turning, metal spinning and polishing.

We handle ferrous and non-ferrous metals, such as aluminium and brass and have coded welders to ASME IX standard using Mig (metal inert gas) welding, Tig (tungsten inert gas) welding.

Taking great pride in being asked by customers to complete fabrications that other manufacturing companies will often decline to quote for, this is where we set ourselves apart from other spinning and fabricating businesses. We have the in-house capabilities and experience to complete the most challenging of fabrication requests.

From complex gas burners used in the gas and oil industry to a simple a welded square tube frame storage unit covered in galvanised sheet, we can meet your fabrication needs.
