About Productive Machines

Productive Machines are a Sheffield based technology company with close ties to AMRC, one of the UK's top high value manufacturing centres.

We use AI to deliver insights into the machining process that increase productivity and overcome process induced problems such as poor surface finish, low dimensional accuracy and instability caused by chatter vibrations.

Rather than the common of approach of trial and error, Productive Machines aim to enable you to get it right first time. We achieve this by creating a digital-twin that we use to simulate your process to quickly arrive at optimised inputs without wasting material or degrading the machine tool.

Sustainable machining

  • Reduce cutting tool costs
  • Reduce material waste, no more trial and error
  • Improve machine tool and spindle health

Improved quality

  • Right first time manufacturing
  • Eliminate chatter vibrations
  • Solve quality issues

Increased productivity

  • Reduced cycle times
  • Reduce post manufacture inspection time
  • Rapid development of new machining processes

There is no need to disrupt your machine shop to install any hardware or software making it simple to give us a try and implement our solutions for your most challenging parts.

Manufacturing Services

Tap Test Processing and Training Service

Description:

An on-site visit to physically tap test cutting tools as installed in the machine tool.

Productive Machines will do this using an instrumented impact hammer, an accelerometer and our proprietary software for tap test processing.

Outputs:

Report showing identified dynamics for each cutting tool as well as files for Frequency Response Function (FRF).

Training:

Half-day tap test training for up-to three technicians

Off-Line Milling Process Optimisation Service

Description:

Cutting force based, machining process analysis of an existing CAM file. Generates optimised feed-rates based on cutting force and chip thickness constraints. Performed remotely via service model using secure, cloud based data exchange of files.

Required inputs:

  • Machine tool model
  • Tool holders and cutting tool spec.
  • Workpiece material spec
  • CAM file of the part machining process or cutter location (tool path) file
  • Dimensional and surface quality requirements

Delivered optimised outputs:

  • Scheduled feed rates
  • Cutting forces
  • Torque and spindle power

Dynamic Chatter Stability Optimisation Service

Description:

An extended force based, machining process analysis, combining Tap Test Processing and Training Service and Off-Line Milling Process Optimisation Service techniques. Tuned to the specific machine tool setup to minimise chatter vibration risk. For complex machining tasks or to maximize productivity at the Machine Tool physical limits.

Required inputs:

  • Machine tool model
  • Tool holders and cutting tool spec.
  • Workpiece material spec
  • CAM file of the part machining process or cutter location (tool path) file
  • Dimensional and surface quality requirements
  • FRF file based on tool tap test

Delivered optimised outputs:

  • Scheduled feed rates
  • Cutting forces
  • Torque and spindle power
  • Reduced tool deflection and form error
  • Spindle speeds
  • Chatter stability map
