SMEs stay resilient

The latest National Manufacturing Barometer suggests that small to medium sized manufacturers in the UK have remained resilient in the face of ‘Brexit’ uncertainty and a spike in exports may even have been achieved.

Of those surveyed, 57% of firms recorded an increase in sales during the last six months. The Barometer also revealed strong optimism for growth, with two thirds expecting sales to grow again during the first half of 2017.

The EFQM Ireland Excellence Awards took place in Bangor on 8 March

IPC Mouldings (IPC) has been awarded EFQM Recognised for Excellence 4 Star at the EFQM Ireland Excellence Awards.

Organised by the Centre for Competitiveness (CforC), the awards are judge on the intenationally renowned EFQM Excellence model which recognises organisations that demonstrate excellence in their performance and quality.

Hone-All director Andrea Rodney was one of the key stakeholders in attendance as construction engineering students tightened the last bolt on the steel frame for Central Bedfordshire College’s new skills and technology centre.

Currently being built in Chartmoor Road in Leighton Buzzard, the £2.5m joint venture between Central Bedfordshire College and SEMLEP will house professionally equipped workshops for the engineering, construction, motor vehicle and aerospace industries.

More start-ups get their big chance

Advanced Engineering is set to extend its Enabling Innovation hub initiative for 2017, following success at last year’s show.

With help from Magna International, there are plans to double the number of innovative SMEs that attend the hub.

Up to 50 carefully-selected SMEs and innovators will now be given the opportunity to exhibit within the Enabling Innovation hub area, with all the exposure they can expect to receive from being part of the UK’s largest gathering of advanced engineering professionals which last year attracted more than 13,000 visitors.

The Sharing in Growth (SIG) programme has helped precision engineering specialist JJ Churchill refine its processes, allowing it to target doubling turnover by 2022.

Engaging in SiG has helped the company set a vision and strategy for the future. It also enabled JJ Churchill to weather the turbulence in the oil and gas sector and, at the same time, reshape the business with a greater focus on the aerospace market.
